From what you've described, it probably was Pleo that you saw. Pleo is designed to interact with its owner pretty much like a pet dog or cat would interact with its owner. Dinosaur Pleo also makes sounds. However, I was unable to confirm that you saw it on the Today show.

I'm trying to find the robotic dinosaur that was (I believe) was on the
